Thinking about installing zip blinds on your balcony in Singapore? Before you choose a fabric or book a consultation, there’s one question that trips up more homeowners than any other: am I actually allowed to do this, and do I need approval first?

The short answer is yes, zip blinds are permitted in most Singapore homes, but the rules differ depending on whether you live in an HDB flat, a condominium, or a landed property. Getting the process wrong can mean having to remove a perfectly good installation at your own cost.

This guide walks you through exactly what applies to your situation, step by step.

The key rule that governs all balcony blinds in Singapore

Before looking at HDB or condo-specific rules, there is one overarching regulation principle from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) that applies to everyone:

You cannot permanently enclose your balcony.

Under URA guidelines, the important distinction is between retractable screening and permanent enclosure. Fixed glass enclosures, solid walls, and panels that seal the balcony entirely are not the safe route because they can change the balcony from a semi-outdoor space into an enclosed area.

Zip blinds, however, are retractable. Because they can be fully opened, they are generally treated more favourably than fixed enclosures. The practical rule of thumb is: if a blind can be fully opened and retracted, it is more likely to be acceptable; if it creates a permanent sealed room, it is not.

The practical rule of thumb: if a blind can be fully opened and retracted, it is generally permitted. If it is fixed or creates a permanent sealed room, it is not.

Condominiums add a layer of complexity because each development is governed by its own Management Corporation Strata Title (MCST), which sets its own by-laws in addition to URA and BCA requirements.

Step 1 : Check your condo’s house rules before anything else

Before contacting any blind supplier, obtain a copy of your condo’s house rules or by-laws from your Managing Agent (MA). Specifically look for:

Some condos require balcony blinds to match a specified colour or fabric type to maintain facade uniformity, so the external appearance can matter even if the blind is technically retractable.

Step 2 : Submit a renovation or alteration application to the MCST

If your condo requires prior approval (many do), you will need to submit a written application. This typically includes:

A description of the installation (product type, dimensions, fabric, colour)

A photograph or diagram of the proposed installation

The supplier’s product specifications or brochure

Your blind retailer should be able to provide the product documentation you need for this submission. At The Curtain Boutique, we regularly assist homeowners with the documentation required for MCST submissions.

Are Ziptrak® / zip blinds allowed in HDB flats?

Yes. HDB permits the installation of retractable outdoor blinds on balconies and service yards. Zip blinds, including track-guided systems like Ziptrak®, fall within this category.

Do you need HDB approval?

For standard retractable blind installations, you generally do not need to apply for HDB approval provided you follow these conditions:

It is installed within the balcony boundary and does not protrude beyond the building facade

It does not obstruct emergency exits or fireman’s access points

It does not affect the structural elements of the building (e.g. hacking is not permitted)

If there is any uncertainty, it is safer to verify the specific HDB position before proceeding, rather than assuming every retractable blind is automatically exempt.

What is not permitted in HDB flats

Ziptrak® installation rules in Landed properties

Landed homeowners generally have the most flexibility, but the installation should still stay within the property boundary and should not create a permanent enclosure. There is usually no MCST, but planning and boundary considerations can still matter.

The main considerations for landed properties are:

Structural surface: Zip blinds can be mounted to wood, steel, brick, or concrete. If mounting to a pergola or canopy, confirm it is structurally sound enough to bear the load.

Boundary lines: Ensure the installation does not extend beyond your property boundary.

Retractable awnings: Zip blinds cannot be mounted directly onto a retractable awning. A fixed steel frame would need to be installed first as an independent mounting point.

Ziptrak® is the original patented track-guided system from Australia, with the fabric welded directly to the side spline using a high-frequency process that covers 23mm of fabric on both sides. This gives it significantly better wind resistance than systems that use a looser spline method, an important consideration for high-rise units in Singapore.

For MCST submissions, using a well-known brand with clear product documentation (like Ziptrak®) can also make approvals smoother, as MCSTs are more familiar with established products.

Wind speeds increase significantly at higher floors. Units above the 20th floor typically experience wind loads 20–40% higher than ground-level units. For high-rise installations, pay attention to:

Wind load rating: Ziptrak® blinds have been tested by TÜV SÜD PSB in Singapore to withstand static wind loads equivalent to 260km/h. Always ask for wind load test data when comparing products.

Motor obstacle detection: Motorised blinds at high floors that have obstacle detection, may stop the motor if wind pressure builds up against the fabric. Although this protects the motor, some homeowners may feel inconvenienced by the inability to move the blinds when in need.

Fabric openness factor : what it means and how it affects compliance

One of the most common questions homeowners ask when choosing a zip blind fabric is: “does the openness of the fabric affect whether my installation is allowed?”

The short answer is yes, fabric openness can affect whether you are permitted to install a zip blind. Fabric choice can also affect MCST approval, appearance, and practical weather performance. Here is what you need to know.

What is the openness factor?

The openness factor refers to how much of a fabric’s surface area is open – essentially, how tightly or loosely it is woven. A fabric with 0% openness has no gaps at all (fully solid, like ClearView® PVC, RainOut® Blackout and Frosted). A fabric with 5% openness means 5% of the surface area is perforated, allowing air, light, and some moisture to pass through.

For zip blinds in Singapore, the most common options are:

Openness factor

What it means in practice

0% (non-porous, e.g. ClearView® PVC, Rainout®)

Fully solid – no air or water passes through. Maximum rain, UV, and insulation performance.

1%

Very tight weave – blocks up to 99% of wind, rain, and UV. Near-solid appearance from outside. Most popular choice for Singapore condos.

5%

More open weave – good light and ventilation, muted view through fabric. Less effective against driving rain.

Does fabric openness affect URA compliance?

URA’s rules states that balcony screens need to allow for natural ventilation/air flow within the balcony at all times, even when the screens are fully drawn closed. URA generally treats balcony blinds as furnishing and does not require planning permission for blinds. However, balconies must remain semi-outdoor, and any screen-like installation should not fully enclose the balcony or block natural ventilation. Condo owners should also check MCST guidelines before installation as some MCSTs may scrutinise this more closely. Choosing a fabric with even a small openness factor (1%) signals that the space is still semi-outdoor in character, which tends to make MCST approvals smoother.

How fabric openness affects MCST condo approvals

This is where fabric choice becomes genuinely important from a compliance standpoint. Many condos specify permitted fabric types in their house rules, often referencing openness factor directly. Common requirements include:

A specified openness factor range, typically 1% to 5%, to maintain facade uniformity and the building’s semi-outdoor aesthetic

A particular colour family (grey, charcoal, or beige tones are most commonly approved)

No fully mirrored or highly reflective fabrics

If your condo specifies “1% to 5% openness,” installing a 0% solid PVC fabric may be rejected – not only because of URA, but also because of the MCST’s own aesthetic rules. Always confirm the approved fabric specification with your Managing Agent before selecting your fabric.

The 0% openness question

ClearView® and similar clear PVC fabrics are 0% openness, fully solid and transparent. They offer the best rain protection and are excellent for retaining cool air, making them popular for restaurant and commercial installations.

For residential use in condos, many MCSTs do not approve clear PVC for balcony-facing blinds because the appearance from outside is more akin to glazing than a soft screen, which conflicts with the semi-outdoor look they want to maintain. Before choosing clear PVC for a condo, confirm explicitly with your Managing Agent.

A practical warning: the “greenhouse effect” with low-openness fabrics

One frequently overlooked issue with 0% or very low openness fabrics in Singapore’s climate: if a fully solid blind is closed while the balcony gets direct afternoon sun, heat can build up between the blind and your sliding glass door. This trapped heat raises the surface temperature of the glass significantly and, over time, can cause thermal stress – particularly in older or thinner glass panels.

For balconies that receive prolonged direct afternoon sun, a 1–5% openness fabric is often a better practical choice than fully solid PVC. The small perforations allow minimal heat exchange that prevents this greenhouse buildup, while still providing strong rain and UV protection.

Openness factor quick reference

Choose 1% if:

You want near-solid weather protection with a fabric appearance

Your balcony is a condo-facing facade (most likely to be approved)

Rain protection is the primary goal and privacy matters

Choose 5% if:

Airflow and view are priorities over rain protection

You are on a lower floor with some shelter from above

Your condo specifies 5% as the approved standard

Choose 0% if:

Your property specifically permits it (case-by-case for private property)

Maximum rain exclusion and air-conditioning containment is the priority

Feng shui is all about balance and flow. Chinese New Year is the one time of year where most of us are already cleaning, refreshing, and resetting the home, so you might as well do it with intention. Here are tips you can use whether you stay in an HDB flat, condo, or landed home in Singapore.

Below, you will see a mix of general feng shui tips and tips that specifically involve curtains and blinds. Keep it simple, do what’s realistic, and your home will already feel better.

1. Spring Clean Before Chinese New Year

This is the foundational reset. Declutter, organise, and deep clean so the home feels lighter and easier to live in.

What to do:

Declutter first, then deep clean. Don’t “clean around” the mess

Pay extra attention to high-traffic zones like the living room, dining area, and common walkway.

Clean windows and wipe dusty ledges, because light is a big part of how a space feels.

Small upgrade that matters: clean areas that guests will actually see, instead of spending 45 minutes scrubbing something nobody notices.

2. Upgrade your “clean” by resetting curtains and blinds

If you want your home to feel refreshed fast, look at your windows. In Singapore, curtains and blinds quietly collect dust thanks to humidity, ventilation, and daily airflow.

Practical reset:

Vacuum curtains with a soft brush attachment (especially near the hem).

Dust or wipe venetian blinds properly, slat by slat.

If your curtains are due for a wash, do it before the visiting season. A “clean home” that smells dusty is still a dusty home.

Bonus feng shui tip: windows are where “qi” comes in. Dirty window furnishings make the whole home feel heavier.

In feng shui, the front entrance is a major “mouth” of the home where energy enters. If it’s messy, dim, or blocked, the home feels stuck.

Do this:

Keep the entrance clean, well-lit, and clutter-free.

Upgrade Your Child’s Room with Custom Curtains & Blinds – Now Accepting LifeSG Credits!

Are you setting up your new home or looking to refresh your child’s room? The right curtains and blinds can do more than just enhance aesthetics—they play a crucial role in creating a safe, comfortable, and stimulating environment for your little ones. And now, with the Singapore government’s $500 LifeSG credits for children under 12, upgrading your child’s space is easier than ever!

At The Curtain Boutique, we’re excited to be part of this initiative, making it possible for parents to use LifeSG credits towards custom curtains and blinds that improve their child’s quality of life.

Why Upgrade Your Child’s Room with Custom Curtains & Blinds?

Children spend a significant amount of time in their rooms—sleeping, playing, and learning. The right window furnishings can provide essential benefits that enhance their daily comfort and well-being.

1) Better Sleep with Blackout Curtains & Dimout Blinds

A good night’s sleep is critical for a child’s growth and development. Disruptions from streetlights, early morning sunlight, and external noise can negatively impact their rest.

✅ Blackout curtains block out up to 100% of external light, helping regulate circadian rhythms and ensuring deep, uninterrupted sleep.
✅ Dimout blinds offer light filtering, perfect for creating a soothing ambiance during naps and bedtime.

Pro Tip: Pairing motorised curtains and blinds with smart home integration allows you to schedule automatic opening and closing, keeping your child’s sleep cycle consistent!

2) Enhanced Safety with Child-Friendly Features

Safety is always a top priority when designing a child’s space. Traditional blinds with long cords pose a strangulation hazard, making it crucial to opt for child-safe designs.

✅ Cordless Motorised Blinds – No dangling cords = no safety risks.
✅ Fabric Selections – Hypoallergenic, dust-mite-resistant materials for better air quality.
✅ Anti-Microbial & Easy-to-Clean Fabrics – Essential for kids prone to allergies.

Did You Know? Many of our curtains and blinds come with anti-bacterial coatings, preventing the buildup of germs and allergens in your child’s room.

3) Create a Stimulating & Creative Environment

A child’s room is their sanctuary for play, imagination, and learning. The right choice of curtains and blinds can enhance creativity, focus, and comfort.

✅ Themed Curtains & Fun Prints – Choose from whimsical designs, space themes, or pastel tones to spark imagination.
✅ Light-Control Blinds – Adjustable daylight exposure to reduce glare for study time and create a cosy atmosphere for bedtime stories.
✅ Acoustic Insulation – Thick fabrics help reduce external noise, perfect for better sleep and concentration.

Bonus Tip: Use double-layer curtains with sheer fabrics to allow soft natural light during playtime while maintaining privacy.

Use Your $500 LifeSG Credits to Upgrade Your Child’s Room!

Did you know? The Singapore government provides a free $500 LifeSG top-up for children under 12, which can be used for home improvements that enhance their well-being—including curtains and blinds!

At The Curtain Boutique, we accept LifeSG credits as a form of payment, making it even easier for parents to invest in their child’s comfort and safety.

How to Redeem Your LifeSG Credits with Us:

1) Check your LifeSG app to confirm your available credits.
2) Visit our showroom or consult with our design experts.
3) Select child-friendly curtains and blinds that suit your home.
4) Use your LifeSG credits towards your purchase!

Make Your Home a Haven for Your Child

A well-designed space is more than just decoration—it supports healthy sleep, learning, and play. With The Curtain Boutique, you can upgrade your child’s room effortlessly while making full use of your LifeSG credits.

Yes, we feel you, cleaning up the house can sometimes be a pain. However, with the COVID-19 virus raging in our community, it’s now more important than ever that we start practicing good hygiene for the sake of ourselves and our loved ones. Stop procrastinating and start cleaning your homes today, yes, I’m talking to you.

Yes, you.

The question is, where should you begin? If you’d like to, before going ahead with the process, play some lively and catchy songs to give yourself the momentum. Here’s a fun fact, fast music helps to boosts one’s productivity. As the layout of everyone’s house is different, we will list out a few universal pointers which we believe will be applicable to all of you out there.

Cleaning Preparation

It is important to take these precautions during the cleaning process. You wouldn’t want to fall ill from cleaning your home. That would be the biggest irony. Most importantly, don a mask and gloves. Do also ensure that you clean one area at a time and sanitise your hands and tools thoroughly before proceeding to clean the next area. This is to ensure that you do not transfer the contaminants from one area to another. As for the direction flow, you should make use of a Top-Down approach. Don’t start your process by cleaning the floor, then wiping your blinds, just to watch the dust from the blinds fall onto your clean shiny floor tiles. Think of it this way, follow the Top-Down approach and you will not have to do double work. This will be especially convenient for time constrained individuals.

Target areas that trap dust

For abundant ventilation, it is ideal to leave your windows open. While fresh air can flow into your home, dust also enters simultaneously. Airborne viruses and dusts are closely associated. With that being said, air borne viruses can potentially spread through dust, making this an alarming issue especially with the COVID-19 situation.

Thankfully, we have our curtains and blinds which acts as a protective layer to trap the unclean air and dust. This significantly reduces the amount of dust entering your home without obstructing the wind flow. However, dust is thus greatly accumulated on our curtains and blinds. We must hence diligently clean our curtains and blinds to ensure that we get to breathe purified air and live in a clean space.

Additionally, you can also opt for products that inherently prevents bacteria and mould such as Ziptrak® outdoor blinds that uses Fabrics from Phifer USA that comes with built in Microban protection, preventing bacteria growth.

Mopping

You should understand that vacuuming the floor alone is simply insufficient. The vacuuming process only cleans the surface and thus still leaves behind bacteria and allergens. For a complete process, you must mop to sanitize the floor. The disinfected flooring will reduce the risk of virus transmission.

You probably heard this line so many times, but still, let’s drill this in our heads: regular cleaning is the key to maintaining a dust-free home. Let’s do this for our loved ones, live in a dust and virus free home starting today.

But with so many selections in the market, which window furnishing should you settle with for the look you want to achieve? We break down the benefits of both curtains and blinds for you.

Curtain Benefits

When it comes to curtains, they are perfect for that cosy yet elegant finish. The amount of fabric used to create curtains means that they are the first thing that your eyes draw to when you step into any room. Hence, the curtains and the fabric you choose can affect the visual vibe and design of your entire room. Quality made to measure curtain fabrics can be spotted from a mile away and makes the entire room feel classy and neat.

The floaty sheers and fabric of day curtains allows for natural light to come in in the day. They softens the look of your room whilst making use of natural sunlight to brighten up the entire room, so you can save on electrical bills. Day Curtain‘s sheer characteristics also prevents people from looking in from the outside in the day, which makes it perfect for those staying within viewing distance of your next block neighbour. This however, is negated in the night when the room is brighter than the surrounding light and neighbours will be able to see through. Which is why most homeowners combine the use of day curtains with either a night dim out or blackout curtain.

Curtains are also essential for bedrooms especially for light sleepers. Dim Out Curtains block up to 80-90% of the light while Blackout Night Curtains can block out 100% of light, to help you create a dark cosy environment that you can easily drift off into. A dark room will also help keep the room cool by reducing the overall room temperature, making it ideal for sleeping.

Blinds Benefits

Blinds are a popular choice because they suit most interior style and have a minimalistic yet clean finish. Blinds are generally catered to modern looking homes that are looking for a sleek window furnishing.

Unlike curtains that you can choose to pair with using day and night curtains, blinds generally is a standalone product where homeowners choose to have it either in sheer or blackout. For example, the choice of a roller blind fabric can only either be sheer or blackout. However, over the past few years, there has been an increase in the number of homeowners mixing blinds with curtains, i.e blackout blinds with day curtains, to enjoy the benefits of day curtains while still having the modern feel of a traditional blind.

Blinds in general can block off most sun rays while allowing some natural sunlight to seep in, creating a dreamy atmosphere in a room. They are affordable and have a wide range of styles, colours, and design that could suit many needs. Choose between traditional venetian blinds, roller blinds, roman blinds and/or the modern korean combi blinds which allows you to control how much light you want come in.

Curtains or Blinds?

When choosing between curtains or blinds, ask yourself these questions before making any decision: Are you living near a busy street? Do you need full light coverage? Or are you leaning towards privacy protection? What theme or style are you going for? Make sure the treatment you choose suits your style and functional needs. However, be it you go for blinds, curtains or both, they would all prove to be great investments for your home.
We all know that feeling of excitement when you get the keys to your new home. That means, it’s time to renovate! Especially when you have a balcony at home, you are constantly thinking “How do I maximise the space?” or “What can I do with all this extra space?”. When it comes to choosing your outdoor blind system, there’s a variety of options to consider, which can make you feel overwhelmed. Should you go with the traditional Outdoor Roller Blind , iGlass Systems or a Zip System instead? If you have chosen to go for a zip blind system, kudos to you! As they are well known for their long-lasting qualities, functionality, and sleek style.

However, throughout The Curtain Boutique’s time in the Singapore Curtains and Blinds market, plenty of different brands of zip blinds have appeared in the market including choices like Ziptrak®, ZipBlind, Ziptrack, Brand X etc… so here you are having to compare and decide which brand or system should you go for and what are the differences between the various brands? Differentiating and choosing between them can be difficult as they share a similar outlook and functionality. However, there are some key differences in their features and system that give Ziptrak® a major advantage; from its patented operation to it’s functionality and performance.

Originally from South Australia, Ziptrak® is built to cope with harsh weather conditions, perfect for Singapore’s sunny and wet seasons. Ziptrak® is made with high quality components and its’ aesthetics is one of the primary difference that sets it apart from other competitors.

One of the key elements of a great zip blind is the method in which the fabric is held in the spline as it affects the overall functionality of the blind. Ziptrak® has a patented side spline system where the material is welded to the fabric, making it one of the toughest in the market. This provides an efficient balance of elasticity and strength, which results in Ziptrak® not only being reliable, but because of the way it’s’ done, makes the zip blinds look so much neater and allows it to move up and down with ease. In contrast, some zip blinds that are commonly found in the market uses a zip system that is much like the standard zipper you see on an item of a clothing i.e jeans etc, mounted onto the channel. Much like the zipper of your old pair of jeans, zip systems could potentially be prone to jamming over time, which is less ideal in rougher weather condition and the operating the blind may not be as smooth.

Ziptrak® blinds boasts a much elegant, refined, and functional locking system and a pelmet that is patented; the Centre-Lock-Release and PestOut® Pelmet. The centre lock allows the blind to lock at its lowest position, providing a secure hold for child-safety and during seasons with high winds. Ziptrak®’s PestOut® Pelmet prevent insects from building nests in the pelmet and the brushes protect and clean the fabric each time you move your blinds. Each component in the Ziptrak® system is carefully selected and designed for its strength, durability, and resistance to rust.

Design & décor suited for children may not be limited only to the personal rooms. If your family spends much of the day in the living and dining area, consider sprucing up these common areas to suit them! Below are some ideas on how to create a home that you and your children will love!

1. Have fun with prints & patterns

Prints and patterns are a great visual treat for kids and can encourage imagination!

Curtains and blinds have more than just a practical use of blocking light and providing privacy, they can also be used to reiterate the interior colour scheme and inject some fun to appeal to the young ones! From animal prints to fun polka dots, The Curtain Boutique has a wide range of prints to suit any child’s tastes! Much like window dressings, printed wallpaper can also instantly add interest and bring youthful energy to a room. What’s more, if your children have made any small dents, scratches or scribbles on the walls, wallpaper could hide such minor imperfections.

2. Child-proof fabrics

‘You’re not allowed in that room’ is a phrase we may remember being told as children. Precious furniture and furnishings may get ruined by adventurous children easily. However, you deserve to enjoy beautiful furniture in tip-top condition together with your children without spending all day cleaning up spills and stains! Fibreguard fabrics stain-free technology makes it incredibly low maintenance and easy to clean. Stains like ketchup and pen ink can be easily removed with just blotting with a wet paper towel! The best part is, the stain-free technology remains even after washing and wear.

FibreGuard fabrics for home furnishings, curtains and upholstery are available in a wide array of colours and patterns at The Curtain Boutique. Try out the demo removing pen ink yourself in the showroom! Contact our dedicated staff at our showroom for more advice on what type of window treatment to choose!

3. Have a designated kids-only area

Whether it’s for reading, crafts or play, having a kids-only area in the family room lets you and your children spend time in close proximity while having space to focus on separate activities!

The family room could also potentially become overrun with toys and school supplies constantly. Having a kids’ corner with storage space will eliminate excuses for not putting things away and ensure the room maintains a measure of calm and order for the adults in the house.

4. Have a clear view

Window grilles may create a closed-in, restrictive effect and clash with the décor. Consider opting for the WinLock window restrictor instead! These prevents your windows from opening past a certain distance to ensure safety for your children. At the same time, they leave the view clear of obstruction and lets the interior design and decor take centre stage. When you’d like to have the windows fully open, simply unlock with the key provided! Winlock window restrictors are tested covered by ISO 9001 certification and tested and certified in Singapore to withstand horizontal force of 2952N (300kg).

You can find the above-mentioned products and more at The Curtain Boutique, the leading supplier of home furnishings in Singapore, along with various soft furnishings like blinds, wallpaper, solar film and Ziptrak® blinds.

More and more Singaporeans are now sharing their homes with their four-legged friends. As much as we adore our pets, cohabitating with them may pose some challenges! Below are some tips on how to create a home that you and your pets will love and live in harmoniously!

1. Durable flooring

Your pets may leave paw prints, scratches, dents or accidental bowel accidents while roaming about at home, so having stain and impact-resistant flooring is important! An option is floor laminate as it’s relatively durable, affordable and easy to clean.

In Singapore’s hot weather, flooring such as ceramic tiles are not only easier to keep clean but also are also cooler to the touch. This may be a consideration particularly for pets with thick or long fur. However, if you have more elderly dogs or cats, tiled flooring can be slippery for them. Add rugs to make it easier and safer for them to move around.

For those who are keen on hardwood flooring, keep in mind that hardwood scratches and dents more easily than other flooring materials, and must be cleaned immediately to prevent staining or warping.

2. Keep away fragile or dangerous items

Aside from keeping clutter away, secure storage is also great for preventing curious paws from reaching fragile or dangerous items. The precious ornaments displayed on open shelving may be tampered with by pets. Try cabinets with glass doors instead! These will keep things on display while ensuring that both your pets and items stay safe.

3. Choose the right furniture & furnishings

The right furniture can save you much hassle in cleaning! Choose couches and chairs with exposed legs to prevent pet hair from accumulating. The same goes for window treatments. Long drapes that pool on the floor will collect hair and other debris. Pets may also get entangled in and damage venetian blinds. Instead, go for simple blinds like roller blinds or combi blinds. Contact our dedicated staff at our showroom for more advice on what type of window treatment to choose!

4. Choose the right fabrics

Your goal is to choose upholstery fabrics that will make things easier for you. Avoid buying chairs and sofas covered in velvet or chenille which attract pet hair, or delicate fabrics like silk that can be easily ruined by playful pets.

Instead, opt for tougher or engineered alternatives, such as FibreGuard. Their high-quality fabrics not only come in a wide variety of types and designs, but also has the latest Stain Free Technology. From stains left by pets to other household stains like coffee spills or pen marks, FibreGuard fabrics are easy to clean and look fresh for years to come! You can find FibreGuard fabrics at The Curtain Boutique, along with a variety of other soft furnishings.

5. Have a designated pet area

Cats and dogs like to have their own go-to personal spots in the home too! You can find affordable ready-made dog crates or cat climbing trees at online pet stores. Or if you prefer to incorporate pet nooks into your existing furniture and décor, there are a few things to try out! Dog beds can fit under cabinets or bookshelves if a few of the lower shelves are removed. Cats love an elevated spot to nap or view the surroundings. Try clearing out a section of a bookshelf that could serve as a cosy spot for your cat. Add securely wall-mounted shelves above low furniture for climbing opportunities.

Like humans, pets have miscellaneous belongings in need of organization for easy accessibility. Add storage space for their toys, brushes and other supplies.

You can find quality soft furnishings like curtains, blinds, wallpaper, Ziptrak® blinds and more to complete the perfect home for you, your family and pets!

Children are curious by nature and they’re sure to uncover danger in all the nooks & crannies in your home that you may not have even thought of! Going through the endless list of things to child-proof can be overwhelming. So here are 5 basic child-proof measures to start with!

1. Mount Furniture

When children climb on furniture, it could tip over and fall on them. Anchor all furniture to the wall if possible, including the television.

2. Lock Lower Furniture

Ensure lower cabinets and shelves are protected. These are the perfect height for toddlers to explore and potentially try to eat or drink. Make sure cleaning products and other chemical products are in locked cabinets or kept in upper shelves. Cabinets can be secured with magnetic locks or traditional latches. Don’t forget toilet cabinets and toilet seats! These are also low on the ground and could be potentially dangerous for children. If your children are able to pull the fridge open on their own, consider installing a latch. Refrigerators could have choking hazards like grapes, breakables like glass bottles, and harmful substances such as medications.

3. Keep Dangerous Objects Out of Reach

Keep small objects that could be potential choking hazards well out of reach in high cabinets or locked away. The culprits could be any miscellaneous items from candles to items that could be dismantled into smaller parts like door stoppers. The list of dangerous objects also includes glass photo frames, heavyweight décor items, kitchen appliances and cutlery. Another danger hazard is exposed power strips. Children could potentially electrocute themselves if they unplug a cord from the power strip and stick metal objects inside. Hide power strips by keeping furniture blocking them or use power-strip covers. If a room or area has a number of danger hazards towards young children, it’s a good idea to ensure its off-limits by gating it.

4. Switch to Cordless Window Blinds

Children playing with blinds can get caught in the cords and strangled. One option is to knot up all dangling blind cords high on the walls. As children may still be able to climb to higher ground and dismantle the knots while unattended, the best option is to remove the hazard by investing in cordless blinds. The Curtain Boutique offers a wide range of premium quality cordless blinds that are motorised and controlled by remote or set to open and close at set timings. For a limited time only, you can get a free toy bear when you purchase any cordless Hunter Douglas blind at The Curtain Boutique!

5. Secure your Windows

Windows should have grilles installed or only be able to open to 13 centimetres. Don’t forget to secure the windows that are high up and seemingly out-of-reach to children. They could potentially climb on other objects or furniture to reach higher heights. Traditional window grilles are a more affordable option to invisible grilles. However, window grilles can make the house feel enclosed with its cage-like effect. It can also spoil the look of the home, especially of a newly renovated and decorated home, by drawing attention to the grids and away from the home décor.

An alternative is to install a window restrictor that prevents the window from opening past a certain distance. This will secure your windows while letting the view remain clear of obstructions. Try the WinLock window restrictor that has been tested to withstand a horizontal force of 2952N (300kg). You can also choose a colour that matches your window frame so it’ll blend in and let the interior design take centre stage.

While these 5 steps of child-proofing cover the basics, there are many more potential danger hazards in homes that we haven’t covered, and no child-safe solution can beat a watchful eye! You can find the above mentioned cordless motorised blinds and WinLock restrictor at The Curtain Boutique, as well as a wide range of premium quality curtains, blinds, wallpaper, Ziptrak® blinds and more!

Having a cosy, comfortable home makes for enjoyable living. We have five tips that will help you create a warm, inviting home that will make you never want to leave!

1. Warm Colours

The effects of colour on the mood of a room is significant! For a cosier ambiance, steer away from bright, glaring colours and go for warmer shades like oranges, muted yellows, and neutral browns.

If your interior design is modern or contemporary, incorporate metals like copper, bronze, brass or rose gold into your décor. Warm metals can instantly enliven a cold room while keeping with the modern theme. An easy and affordable option is to display copper decorative objects or everyday items. You can also use a copper coloured spray paint to transform pieces you already have.

2. Warm Lighting

Lighting is a key aspect in setting ambiance. Switch out cool-toned bulbs for warm ones to instantly add a cosy vibe to the room. The trick to having a subtle, warm glow in your home is separate lights. Avoid having a single source of bright light which will create a harsh look. Instead, go for multiple lamps throughout the room with dimmers that allow you to control how many lights are on and to adjust the intensity of light for a soft, inviting atmosphere.

3. Natural Elements

The inside-out interior concept has been a popular trend recently for a good reason! Nature brings life into a space, so be sure to bring in elements from outside.

The easiest way to make a living indoors feel like outdoors is to add plant life to your home. Large leafy plants like the rubber tree or the snake plant make a welcoming statement and freshen the air. Some low maintenance options are air plants, cacti or succulents.

Another natural element is real wood which creates a luxurious and inviting atmosphere. Wood floors and doors are a common way to introduce texture to a home. An easier option would be to go for wooden venetian blinds that are sophisticated and add a relaxed feel to a room. Adjust the slats to filter out daylight for soft lighting and a cosy environment.

4. Curtains

Curtains lined across the walls will radically transform the atmosphere of a room, making it feel grand and warm at the same time. Generally, lighter coloured curtains create a spacious aspect while dark curtains make a room a more intimate and restful space. We recommend opting for two layers of full-length curtains for versatility. Night curtains will reduce heat and glare while day curtains will diffuse and enhance the sunlight to create a welcoming space.

5. Layers of Fabric

Nothing says cosy & comfortable like comfy layers of fabric in the home. While carpet flooring may not be suitable for Singapore’s humid climate, a few strategically-placed small rugs can create a similar effect of cosiness with a soft touch to the feet. Layer soft blankets and throws over sofas and chairs, or frame textiles as wall art. Fuzzy fabrics like faux fur are especially cosy!

You can find a wide range of premium curtains, blinds, outdoor blinds, Ziptrak® blinds and more at The Curtain Boutique!
