Why Did My Motorised Ziptrak® Stop? Understanding Obstacle Detection

You press the remote to lower your motorised Ziptrak® outdoor blinds , but instead of continuing smoothly, it suddenly stops halfway. Does this mean something is wrong with the motor?

Not necessarily. Depending on the motor installed, your Ziptrak® may be equipped with an obstacle detection function that automatically stops operation when resistance is detected. This could happen when an object obstructs the bottom bar or when strong winds create additional pressure against the fabric.

Understanding how obstacle detection works can help you identify what is happening, operate your blinds correctly and avoid unnecessary strain on the system.

At a Glance

  • What it does: Obstacle detection stops compatible motorised Ziptrak® blinds when resistance is detected, helping protect the system from unnecessary strain.
  • Why it happens: Common triggers include physical obstructions and strong wind pressure against the fabric.
  • What to do: Check for obstructions, wait for strong winds to subside and avoid repeatedly operating the motor against resistance.

What Is Obstacle Detection in Motorised Ziptrak® Blinds?

Obstacle detection is a protective function available with selected motors used for motorised Ziptrak® outdoor blinds. It is designed to detect resistance during operation and stop the motor when that resistance reaches a certain threshold.

For example, if an object is obstructing the bottom bar as the blind lowers, a compatible motor may stop rather than continuing to push against it. The same function can also activate when strong winds exert pressure against the fabric, creating additional resistance as the blind moves.

By stopping operation under these conditions, obstacle detection helps reduce unnecessary strain on the motor and other components of the blind system. However, it is important to understand that this is primarily an equipment protection feature, not a dedicated personal safety mechanism. Children and pets should always be kept clear of moving blinds, even when obstacle detection is available.

What Can Trigger Ziptrak® Obstacle Detection?

There are several reasons why a motorised Ziptrak® blind may suddenly stop during operation. While a physical obstruction is the most obvious cause, outdoor conditions can also influence how smoothly the system operates.

Objects Obstructing the Blind’s Path

Balconies are often furnished with outdoor seating, tables, plants and decorative accessories. Occasionally, an item may be placed too close to the blind’s operating path without the homeowner realising it.

When the bottom bar encounters an obstruction, the additional resistance may activate obstacle detection, causing the motor to stop. This helps prevent the system from continuously pushing against the object, which could otherwise place unnecessary stress on the blind.

Before operating your Ziptrak®, we recommend ensuring that the entire travel path is clear, particularly around the bottom bar and side tracks. If the blind stops unexpectedly, check for objects that may be interfering with its movement before attempting to operate it again.

Strong Wind Pressure Against the Fabric

Another common reason for obstacle detection to activate is strong wind pressure, particularly in high-rise homes and balconies exposed to sudden gusts.

Unlike conventional loose-hanging outdoor blinds, Ziptrak® features a patented track-guided system that keeps the fabric securely contained within its side tracks. This design helps minimise excessive fabric movement and provides greater stability against outdoor conditions.

However, when strong winds push against the fabric, additional tension can develop across the blind. As the motor attempts to raise or lower the fabric, this tension may create enough resistance to activate the obstacle detection function.

This does not necessarily indicate a fault. Instead, the motor may be responding to the resistance created by the prevailing wind conditions.

It is also worth noting that wind resistance and motor operation are two different considerations. Although Ziptrak® is engineered to withstand substantial wind loads under specified conditions, this does not mean the blind should be operated against significant wind pressure.

What Should You Do When Your Ziptrak® Stops Unexpectedly?

If your motorised Ziptrak® stops halfway, the first step is to identify whether there is an obvious obstruction or whether strong winds may be affecting its operation.

Check that no furniture, plants or other objects are interfering with the bottom bar or tracks. If the blind appears to be under significant wind pressure, allow the wind to subside before attempting to operate it again. Closing your balcony sliding doors may also help reduce the wind-tunnel effect that can occur when air flows through the balcony and into the home.

In certain situations, wind pressure may cause the fabric to stretch and create additional tension along the side splines. Depending on the circumstances, gently relieving the pressure at the centre of the fabric may help reduce this tension before operating the blind again. This should only be attempted in accordance with the recommended operating instructions and when it is safe to do so.

Most importantly, avoid repeatedly pressing the remote or forcing the blind to operate when significant resistance is present. Continuing to operate the motor against an obstruction may place unnecessary strain on the system and could eventually activate another protective function: overheat protection. For more detailed operating instructions, refer to the Ziptrak® motorised outdoor blinds user guide.

If your blind continues to stop despite clear operating conditions and no visible obstruction, contact our Customer Success Team for assistance rather than attempting to dismantle or adjust the system yourself.

Obstacle Detection vs Overheat Protection: What’s the Difference?

Although both functions can cause a motorised Ziptrak® blind to stop moving, obstacle detection and overheat protection serve different purposes.

Obstacle detection responds to resistance during operation. When the motor detects sufficient resistance, such as an obstruction or strong wind pressure against the fabric, it stops to help protect the blind system.

Overheat protection responds to prolonged motor operation. Motorised Ziptrak® systems are designed to operate within specified duty cycles. Depending on the motor model, continuous operation for approximately four minutes may activate thermal protection, temporarily stopping the motor to prevent overheating.

When this happens, the motor may require approximately 15 to 20 minutes to cool down before normal operation can resume. The exact operating and cooling periods depend on the motor specifications.

This distinction is useful when troubleshooting. If your blind stops while encountering resistance, obstacle detection may be responsible. However, if the motor becomes unresponsive after repeated or prolonged operation, it may have entered its cooling period.

Rather than repeatedly pressing the remote, allow the motor sufficient time to recover and check whether any external conditions may be affecting the blind.

Does Every Motorised Ziptrak® Have Obstacle Detection?

Not every motorised Ziptrak® system comes equipped with obstacle detection. The availability of this function depends on the motor model selected during installation.

At The Curtain Boutique, we offer different motorisation options to accommodate varying requirements, including the size of the blind, preferred controls and additional motor features. Selected compatible motors feature obstacle detection, while other models may offer different operating and protection functions.

This is why choosing a motorised outdoor blind should involve more than simply deciding between manual and remote-controlled operation. Understanding the features of the motor itself can help homeowners make a more informed decision, particularly for balconies exposed to stronger winds or frequently used outdoor spaces.

Our Design Consultants can explain the available motor options and recommend a suitable configuration based on your balcony dimensions, exposure to outdoor conditions and everyday usage.

Why Does the Ziptrak® Side Spline Matter?

While obstacle detection is a motor function, the overall performance of a motorised outdoor blind also depends on how its components work together.

One of the defining features of genuine Ziptrak® is its patented side spline, which is securely welded along both edges of the fabric and guided within the side tracks. This design helps keep the fabric contained, reducing side gaps and excessive movement when exposed to wind.

Unlike loose-hanging outdoor blinds that may sway freely, Ziptrak® is designed to maintain a more stable and enclosed balcony environment. However, the same track-guided construction means that strong wind pressure against the fabric can create resistance during operation.

The obstacle detection function, where available, provides an additional layer of equipment protection by allowing the motor to stop when excessive resistance is detected.

Understanding how the motor and track-guided system interact can help homeowners appreciate why a blind may occasionally stop during challenging weather conditions, even when the system is functioning as intended.

When Should You Arrange for Your Ziptrak® to Be Checked?

An occasional stop during strong winds or when an object obstructs the blind does not necessarily indicate a problem. However, repeated interruptions under normal operating conditions may require further assessment.

If your Ziptrak® frequently stops despite calm weather, a clear operating path and sufficient time for the motor to cool down, we recommend arranging for a professional inspection.

Our Customer Success Team can assist in assessing the operation of the blind, including the motor, side tracks and other relevant components, to determine whether servicing or adjustment is required.

Avoid attempting to force the blind, dismantle the tracks or make adjustments to the motor yourself, as improper handling may cause additional damage.

A Smarter Way to Protect Your Motorised Ziptrak®

Motorised outdoor blinds are designed to make everyday balcony living more convenient. With a simple press of a button, homeowners can adjust their blinds to manage sunlight, wind and rain without manually operating each panel.

However, convenience is only one aspect of a well-designed system. Protective functions such as obstacle detection help compatible motors respond when operating conditions are less than ideal, reducing unnecessary strain on the blind.

The next time your motorised Ziptrak® stops unexpectedly, consider whether an obstruction, strong wind pressure or prolonged operation may be responsible before assuming there is a mechanical fault.

At The Curtain Boutique, we have helped thousands of homeowners find suitable window furnishing and outdoor blind solutions for their homes. As a pioneer retailer of genuine Ziptrak® in Singapore, we understand the importance of choosing a system that suits both your balcony and the way you use it.
